I’m not sure when the Orphan Thanksgiving tradition started in my family, but it’s all I can remember. Immediate family, close friends. One year the parents put beets in our mashed potatoes and served cold soup and I cried because it wasn’t normal. Another year we shot guns in the country fields and I ate an entire package of marshmallows. I’ve fallen into food comas or not eaten at all (horrible hangover), and celebrated in different lands - San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Brooklyn. It’s a holiday spent unexpectedly.
On Sunday, I’m heading to Seattle and will share all I’m thankful for over a college-cooked meal with my little sister and her friends. I’m sure the day will be a shiny memory in my forgetful head for so many delicious and love-filled reasons.
