DEPUTY MAYOR FOR EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DENNIS WALCOTT JOINS OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST MICHAEL PHELPS AT THE YMCA OF GREATER NEW YORK

Deputy Mayor for Education and Community Development Dennis M. Walcott will join with 14-time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps at the YMCA of Greater New York’s McBurney Branch in Manhattan to participate in VISA’s Play Every Day ‘Jump Start’ grant presentation. A portion of the grant will support the YMCA’s Second Grade Swim initiative in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education.  Deputy Mayor Walcott will deliver opening remarks at the YMCA McBurney Branch at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, August 28, 2008.  Second Grade Swim began in 2007 city-wide, following a pilot project by the Prospect Park YMCA in 2006.  So far 1,700 students from 27 city schools have participated, and the Y plans to serve 3,000 kids a year.  The program is provided to schools for free, with support from the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, JPMorgan Chase Foundation and the Heckscher Foundation.

Ummm…ON MY WAY OVER!
